Watoto Wetu
Our Maternal Health Program is a comprehensive initiative designed to support Black diaspora families through every stage of pregnancy.
Rooted in cultural sensitivity and community empowerment, this program offers essential services for black mothers:
At AFHHO, the "Watoto Wetu" program is a cornerstone of our mission to nurture and empower Black and African families in Portland. The program focuses on addressing alarming disparities in maternal and infant health. Did you know that Black mothers in the U.S. are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than their white counterparts? This staggering statistic underscores the urgent need for culturally competent maternal care, a gap that Watoto Wetu seeks to bridge.
Through Watoto Wetu, we provide holistic support for mothers, including culturally tailored mental health services, advocacy in navigating healthcare systems, and resources to combat stress and its adverse health effects. These efforts are critical, as up to 40% of Black mothers experience postpartum depression, yet many lack access to appropriate care. By integrating mental health support and addressing structural biases in healthcare, we aim to improve outcomes for both mothers and their children, ensuring they thrive physically, emotionally, and socially.
Our program is not only about addressing challenges but also celebrating resilience. By offering a supportive community and actionable solutions, Watoto Wetu helps families overcome systemic barriers while creating a brighter future for the next generation.

Baby Shower
Celebrating New Life in Community
Our Baby Shower service is more than just a celebration—it’s a community gathering that honors the beauty and strength of new life within Black diaspora families.
Expecting parents receive not only essential gifts but also the collective wisdom and support of their community. It’s a moment to connect, share, and prepare for the incredible journey of parenthood.
Diaper Distribution
Our diaper distribution program is designed to support mothers by providing them with essential supplies. Each month, for the first 18 months of their child's life, participating mothers will receive a supply of diapers and wipes.
This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on families and ensure that their babies have the necessary hygiene products during their early development stages.
