Building healthier lives for Portland’s African Diaspora communities

Transformation through relationship and holistic health

Our approach to family health is different

We wrap around Portland’s African Diaspora communities and help each family identify their unique needs and ways to improve their lives. We utilize a trauma-informed, systems-thinking approach firmly grounded in popular education and Polyvagal Theory to address physical, mental, emotional, and financial health, empower individuals, and create healthier families and communities.

Our story

The founding of the African Family Holistic Health Organization was inspired by a deep commitment to positively changing the lives of the African community in Portland in 2014. With a history of four years dedicated to community organizing and direct service work within Portland's vibrant African community, our passionate community health workers observed the pressing issues of social isolation, limited self-empowerment, and the underrepresentation of Swahili-speaking families, especially African women. Driven to make a meaningful impact, we set out to address these challenges with the unwavering dedication to relationships and compassion that defines our organization.

Vision

To support African families in replanting their roots in the Portland Metro Area.

Mission

To holistically train and connect African families, enhancing their mental, emotional, financial, and physical well-being.

Frantzy Nazaire
"When I got to Portland, I was so relieved that AFHHO helped my family find a home in just a month! They’ve also helped us get some essentials for the house. I hope to get some help finding a job and getting my kids into school soon."

Mereste Polite
"I left Haiti in 2014, and the journey has been tough. AFHHO has really stepped up to help me, especially with housing. I’m hoping to keep getting support so I can find a stable place to live and build a better life."
